These hampers were sent in baskets as the basket itself could be a useful household item. More recently hampers have changed from just the wicker baskets to other forms of containers – gift boxes of all types, shapes and sizes, bowls and even tin containers. 
The tradition of the Christmas hamper as a gift hamper/basket originated before other gift hampers, however these days gift hampers and baskets are given for any occasion.
